Dans l’esprit collectif, le rapport poids/taille que représente l’IMC est un réel indicateur de votre état de santé. Pourtant, l’IMC ne fait pas le tri entre la graisse, la musculature ou ossature.

Un grand sportif avec des muscles très lourds pourra être classé comme étant en « surpoids », avec un IMC très élevé, sans pour autant avoir un taux de graisse dangereux pour sa santé. À inverse, quelqu’un de très peu musclé et à ossature légère pourra avoir un IMC très inférieur tout en ayant accumulé beaucoup de graisse. L’IMC n’indique pas la localisation de la graisse et donc sa dangerosité.
